Dear Lovely Readers,
This post comes to you from my living room couch, where I am currently resting from the strenuous activity of getting out of bed, finding my glasses and booting up my laptop. I am 87% sure that what I thought was an allergy flare up this weekend was in fact the beginnings of a cold. And since I didn’t take care of myself….you get the picture. But enough of that, I have lots of fluids an impressive array of meds and a house full of cats that are delighted to have me home.
The November after I graduated from college I was super broke and my car was unreliable so I had to skip driving home for Thanksgiving. Several of my friends found themselves in similar situations so we all went over to my friend Billy’s apartment to cook dinner together. I really shouldn’t say this, since my family wasn’t there, but it is one of my favorite holiday memories. Billy and I ended doing most of the cooking, Justin and his boyfriend “supervised” and drank a lot, we had Billy’s girlfriend on speakerphone from Miami, and the day ended with us eating dinner on the living room floor while watching Nightmare Before Christmas. Awesome. One of the kitchen tips I picked up that day was a simple trick for making the apartment smell warm and delicious before the cooking even started. All you had to do was take cinnamon sticks, cloves and nutmeg, put them in a pot with water and leave to simmer on one of the back burners. Simple and all you had to do to keep it going was add water ever now and again.
Supplies needed –
- Coffee filters
- Embroidery thread and needle
- Dried orange and apple peels
- Cinnamon sticks
- Sprigs of fresh rosemary
Stuff the coffee filters with a handful of the spice mixture.
Thread the needle and sew the top opening closed. It’s that simple!
I can’t wait for it to finally get cold enough for Andy and I to try one of these out in our fireplace.
